Has Potential

the thin arpsynth you use in the intro was a nice way to catch my ear in the start. The beat is satisfactory but needs more variation and dyanmics. Bassline has a slick sound- but sounds overly familiar O.o.

the hi hat samples and loose snare are alright, but the overused dance kick doesnt work in here. It sounds bad IMO when you use the 16th notes riff as a transition fill, and it really just has a plain texture. Try EQing the bass levels differently from the actual bassline, or just replace it with a more fitting acoustic/real kick sound with more of a midrange as that would be more fitting with the other drums, atleast I think so. Try aiming for an accented hi hat note at the beginning of each bar, and more variation wouldnt hurt, such as a moderately used crash, tom fills, and alternate a bit more between open and closed hi hat samples.

What I also think you could do is try variating the background arpsynth melodies a bit more, maybe add a cool phaser effect on them in the end. A lead instrument would also be nice in here, you can start of by mimicing the bassline.

Pretty cool track, has a fairly decent feel and flow. Its listenable as theres no volume spikes or harsh sounds, but there could be a little bit more gloss here to make this sound more interesting. Just keep up the good work and good luck with your game dude.

KACHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

yo watsup :).

cool intro, some interesting ambient sounds with lighting sounds, creepy tunnel reverb sounding like effects, and that metal clang to give it a gothic touch. Once again, good job varying up the trance/techno beats. The lead melody is quite tight, reminds me of the mortal kombat theme a bit. It ended kinda suddenly however, I would have kept the beat going and not gone back to the intro section, and then used some kind of melodical hook to transition into that catchy percussive arpsynth around 2:00. But once the beat and track gets back in groove, it sounds real nice. Saw Bass is sharp and danceable, and the new synth sounds really cool in the style that youre using.

I like the buildup with the saw basslines around 3:15. Again, some real nice melodical content in here, some really cool intensive stuff suitable for battle scenes. (I would have used a different synth then the one at 3:30, but thats just personal taste :P) They sound really good in the end they way you made them play more actively.

so this track is pretty kickass man, but probably couldve just cut out a part to make the track play more consistently...but otherwise, good job once again, this one's original!

Twistedtechnology responds:

glad to see you like itXD I WAS WAITING FOREVER FOR YOUR REVIEW >:O

lol, thanks 4 the review!

eat chips, skateboard, wear flipflops, etc.

9/10 for being satirical. this is some funny (although tasteless) shit man. dont know why its rated so slow, you're just joking right? ..you made me LOL!

nice floaty beat, some serious sounding melodies. I like the sampled crushed snare, and downpitched voice. lyrics work too lol! good stuff.

OgLoft responds:

Yo man thanks for the review and keep it real

hellz yeah

i'm loving this man, such a great rendition, I love your classical take of this, the strings section are so sweet, I had no idea this would sound so good on these types of instruments. Sounds like you nailed every note dead on too. The only problem with the composition is that it ends abruptly, try making it end on a more resolving chord (use all the voices) and extend the note longer.

The sound quality is pretty good in the current stage right now, a deeper reverb would make it sound more like a real orchestra. And maybe some brass to give it a more battleish feel. I really think you could make this track better if you added some percussion-I see that you said you didnt want to include messed up percussion, but some simple timpani hits and a crash every four bars or so would make a much more epic track. I'd love to add drums in here, hit me up if thats cool with you (and if you dont no biggie)

anyways, cool stuff, interesting remix.

WritersBlock responds:

Yeah, I see what you mean. I might try and add brass if you want to put some drums in here. The point about the abrupt ending, well, I did it to make it loop, but the ending and starting have that versatility for the ending you mentioned.
I might mess about with that too, and if I get some good changes happening then I'll get back to you about the drums.

Cheers.

Tasty stuff :P

this has a very pleasant sound to it!

chord progression is touching, and I like the traditional sounding instruments in here. I can't really tell what that instrument is, would it happen to be an accordeon or bandeon? Whatever it is, wise choice. it does remind me of a downtown setting, I actually picture a Jewish slum around the time of the holocaust. Piano melody is good but possibly could use more rhythmic variation, but its quite suitable for background music. I wish this piece was longer- if you do happen to make more of your piece it would be cool to incliude some reverbed keys, and maybe a soloist fiddler and a clarinet, with some gloomy melodies. I like the little short lick leading back into the intro, but the little pause between the last chord and that bit feels a tad awkward...

Good work man!

Korpze responds:

thx, its a violin

yea-yea-yea, yah

you know, that rhythm is somewhat catchy and easy to rock to, and probably would be easy to lay a rap over. (This sounds like a hip-hop influenced techno to me) Other than adding just instruments as the reviewer suggested below, you certainly need to incorporate more complex riffs as the track develops. It was a bit difficult to listen to an entire three minutes of the same four notes looped over a 3 and a half minute sound ;) Trying not only spicing the rhythm up more, but trying creating more varied melodical content. You can let the main theme lull in the background as a bassline.

Sounds are pretty nice, even though they are a bit generic sounding. samples are a cool fit, but theyre overused- you'll recognize this as you produce more. Trying adding more percussion and spicing up the beat too-like add some consistent hi hats and stuff like that. i do like the snap fills use in sections....and after that, you'll need to do some mixing and customize your sounds more to create a more personal sound...but dont bother worrying about that now.

no big compositional errors, one thing I think you did a good job of was sequencing. you used the same main riff, but you used different ways to play your ideas. however, It was just too simplistic-even though some may think otherwise. Like I said, just trying building from what you got. I hope my suggestions help, and keep producing man. and dont worry about the 5, you still get a 5 vote for trying man. :P

LurkerPatrol responds:

:O

Thank you so much for the awesome review! :D I lmfao'd at the title "yeah yeah yeah, yah". It is a bit repetitive huh. Well I'll see if I can work in another melody and beat to spice things up. I'm thinking I might leave this as is, and make a Gala version 2 or remix or something that incorporates those changes. Your advice was great and I very much appreciate it :D Thanks bro.

Glad to see you back in the groove :)

I laughed at your description XD...."the smell of rice is distant in the air"

yea man, relaxing pentatonic, asian sound....like a monk meditatiing in his temple...Good sounds in here man, tibetan bells are a good fit, and I like the slow, basic beat with the taiko(if thats what youre using) and the tambourine. The synth strings flow nice and this pretty well sequenced. Its a tad short but I'm glad you put this out to get back in to submitting stuff. Cant offer any criticism in here other than making a possible suggestion to add more instruments (if you decide to make this longer). Some oriental plucked strings like a koto or something...if you have access to those sounds...and definetly a gong would be cool used at the beginning of certain sections!

cool bro :)

wyldfyre1 responds:

well i do have access to some of those sounds and yes that was a taiko =) thought it would be perfect for something like this. I'll be sure to add more to it and perhaps even add a gong in haha.. Thanks for the great review as usual!

I like this...

nice upbeat track, the composition was a bit too poppy for my tastes-but it perfectly fits the mood you're going for and its certainly catchy. Great job putting this track together.

the guitar strings have a great feel, some very happy arpeggiation that flow over the top of everything nicely. The pizzicato strings (I think thats what it is) are a nice addition, and the bassline is simple and great. The flute interlude was my favorite part, thats a very cool, good structured solo.

Great job with the sequencing, as you introduced the guitar tones, then the strings, fused those, had an interlude, and the combined all the instruments playing and added new hand percussion making for a grand last chorus, and then did a simple conclusion. You kept everything pretty basic and easy to follow, which is an an essence for a relaxing, laid back track like this. No real criticism here, although some of your synths;/samples are not the most authentic sounding. But it's suitable for an old school (but not too old-maybe mid late 90ish) RPG game. And you mixed everything quite well, as its pretty clear and the instruments are well defined. maybe you could start off or end with a warm, swelling pad unless if you're going for a looped type.

Excellent job once again!

kelwynshade responds:

It's always a pleasure reading your reviews.

I totally went for the SNES era RPG style music. Nothing too over the top, but something you could listen to over and over and not really get irritated listening to.

I'm never satisfied though. I always feel there are room for improvements. I take the things I've learned and try to slowly enter them into new songs, so, maybe someday you'll hear something REALLY good =)

Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Sick!

decent intro, but it was kinda slow and overly long IMO. the first 17 seconds werent particularly interesting. You've got a nice melody to work with, but since its solo you should probably intergrate a more developed rhythm. once the toms com in real nice...good job of keeping it unpredictable, I really wasnt expecting that majestic major chord coming in, sounds really good. I would have made a little hook with the guitar and then brought in the main sequence right theyre....Now the spooky melody sounding melody that comes in around 1:45 came in to unexpected, like they're an accompaniment for a section that already happened. So I believe there should be a better transition right there.

Guitars sound really great! Very good job with the mixing, you've got a nice distorted tone, and the choirs dont sound so cheap in combination. Maybe try panning your cymbals to the left or right a little bit more for a more stereo mix. Thats a really kickass heavy riff around 3:15, and I love the blast beats. double bass drums are hella awesome. and I love the tranisitioning back into the original theme, and I love how you mimicked the main choir melodies with another vocal range. No guitar solo? :(

so a real sweet track you got here, I just thought the intro was too long. oh and check your inbox :P

TheRealSam responds:

Wooow thanks a lot for this detailled review! I read all of it! :p
Yeah I know for the longness of the intro, and the lack of variety, and I'm hoping to get, maybe one day, the "revelation" and replace some things which better riffs or better rythms.
Thanks a lot for the PM you sent me, I actually use Magnus Choirs, but I'll go check the ones you gave me out anyway, cuz I'm still searching for "perfection" lol!
And for the mixing, it's kinda surprising cuz I only use 3 programs: CUBASE LE I got with my pedal (Zoom G2.1u, which I can plug in USB), Fruity Loops (for the background sounds, now with Ezdrummer, EWQL Hardcore Bass and GPO) and Magix Music And Video Maker Generation 6 which I use for all the mixing stuff. So it ain't something very "professional" but I'm glad to see that I can dig something very acceptable with it!
So thanks a lot for the review and what you sent to me, you're welcome anytime man!! :)

^_______________^

JEEZ THIS IS GOOD (i'm probably give it a 9 because i'm in a harsh reviewing mood hahah-still definetly good enough to go into my favs)

another kickass composition once again. Reallly freaking cool enthralling bass riff, super-joyous piano and great, well varied drum loops! The guitar riff is kickass as well, its the perfect sound to glace off the whole mix. The piano composition is so beautiful, you use the perfect combination of arpeggios to make me super happy ^___^ distorted guitar chords sound nice on the side...I like the section around 2:35ish, with the nice bass riff, interesting tom fills, and its amazing how when the simple snare came in it really had me bobbing my head.

the sound is crisp and great. I love how the bass feels, its got a definable texture and doesnt have a muddy sound that usually sinks beneath the mix. drum samples are mixed quite well and the piano is authentic enough for my tastes. I think the lead guitar could be tweaked better-I personally prefer the tones that you used in "All the things you said" and "I shouldnt fall in love"-a tad more reverb and a delay effect would be the perfect fit for this track, maybe symbolic for a kite blowing high and gracefully in an empty but kind field. I think the tone is quite suitable for the power chords tho :)

I guess I personally would like more lead guitar in here I guess :) and maybe some soft strings during a section where there's not a huge layer of instruments too.

anyways, this is fantastic jnry! It's guaranteed to cheer anybody up. Lots of visual stuff this could represent. It kinda reminds me of the video game Spyro the purple dragon when's he's flying around, and also watching Nickelodeon in the morning as a kid (the best times), this would be perfect for a happy credits scene where everybody returns home alive and well and there's a huge feast! Or even music to wake up to for a ringtone/alarm. I just feel like running through green hills as fast as I can while jumping in the air with glee!

jnry3 responds:

Again, thanks for another golden review. ^_^ And I'm glad I've made that happy effect on people who hear this track.

I'm actually tweaking this song again (too bad I can't edit this page anymore) in preparation for the indie album. I'm actually quite happy with the tone of the guitar here, but I'd prefer adding compression instead of reverb or delay, but I'd put in a dash of reverb.

Hmm... if I'll use strings, it'll be more of a filler. We'll see, we'll see... but I'm already happy with the set of instruments in this track.

Drums and cymbals will be reworked on. I assembled a HUGE set in my sequencer. Right now, it's an 8-piece set (1 snare, 2 toms, 1 kick bass, 2 hi-hats, 1 crash, and 1 ride); it's now in a 16-piece set, with more crash, ride and tom varieties.

Again, thanks for the big, big review! ^_^

Cherish the moment. For in a moment, it will be gone.
